Elastic Cartilage. The image on the left is a low magnification of elastic cartilage (yellow arrows). It is surrounded by a perichondrium (green arrow). The clear spaces indicated by the black arrow are fat cells.

The image on the right is a higher magnification of the perichondrium. The fibrous portion (black arrow) contains collagen, fibroblasts, and mesenchymal cells. Representative chondroblasts within the chondrogenic layer are indicated by the green arrows. these cells, responsible for the appositional growth of the cartilage, have not yet enclosed themselves with matrix.
