ENDOCRINE SYSTEM LABORATORY

This laboratory is concerned with the identification of the histological features of the endocrine systems. It includes a study of the following endocrine glands: Pituitary, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Suprarenal, and the Islets of Langerhans.
1. Be able to distinguish the Pars Distalis, Pars Intermedia, and the Pars Nervosa.
2. Within the Pars Distalis, be able to distinguish the Acidophils, Basophils, and the Chromophobes.
Thyroid gland: Be able to identify: Follicles, Colloid, Follicular cells, and Parafollicular cells.
Parathyroid gland: Be able to identify Chief cells and Oxyphil cells.
Suprarenal gland: Be able to identify the Cortex and Medulla. Within the cortex, be able to identify the Zona Glomerulosa, Zona Fasciculata, and the Zona Reticularis.
Islets of Langerhans: be able to identify an Islet of Langerhans within the pancreas. Identification of individual cell types is not possible with the stain used for these sections.
